When it comes to networking, communication, and, well, life in general, being able to accurately assess our own abilities is an important skill. It helps us set realistic deadlines and expectations, keeps us from getting in over our heads, and enables us to identify areas for improvement.
But accurate self-assessment is really, genuinely hard. In psychology studies, self-reporting is classically the most unreliable kind of data.1 This is because self-awareness is hard, and there are numerous cognitive biases that prevent us from viewing ourselves dispassionately and accurately.2 (This is why feedback from others is so important—they can help us see our blind spots.3)
Knowing just enough to be dangerous
One of the cognitive biases that can interfere with our accurate assessment of our own skills is the Dunning-Kruger effect (DKE).4
Like the stages of a butterfly, from caterpillar to chrysalis to its final form, the DKE has three developmental stages for a practitioner who is learning a new skill.
First, there is the novice. They are brand new, setting out to climb a mountain. At the base, their confidence is low. The novice knows they are a novice.
As the novice makes progress, they gain experience, feeling more sure-footed with every step. By the time they reach the summit, they are also at peak confidence—and they aren’t a novice anymore. They have become a sophomore, derived from the Greek words sophos (meaning “wise”) and mōros (meaning “foolish”). A “wise fool,” second year students were historically dubbed sophomores because they knew enough to be dangerous, possessing knowledge but not wisdom.
And what’s dangerous about the sophomore is that, though they have acquired skill and experience, they lack the expertise necessary to accurately assess their skills. They are ignorant of their own ignorance (meta-ignorance). At this peak in confidence, the sophomore relaxes, stops being as vigilant, and gets complacent. This moment is when developing surgeons are most likely to make life-threatening mistakes5 and when newly solo pilots (having between 50 and 350 flight hours) are statistically most likely to have a fatal crash.6 The overconfidence of the sophomore is the first half of the DKE.
Past this peak, as the sophomore continues to gain skill and experience, their confidence begins to drop from peak levels. This is them metamorphosing into the final stage: the expert. The true expert, our butterfly mountaineer, has acquired enough contextual awareness to accurately assess their own skills. The tendency of experts to under-rate their skills and abilities compared to others is the second half of the DKE.
A quote often misattributed to Einstein, Aristotle, and several other historical figures is, “The more you know, the more you know you don’t know.” The complementary DKE version of this statement would be, “The less you know, the less you know you don’t know.”
“Quickly out of my depth”
My favorite personal example of the DKE comes from a dark time. My father was deathly ill in the hospital with an infection. (Don’t worry, he made it through. Hi Dad!) There were several rotating infectious disease doctors who came to see him, and I had a favorite. We’ll call him Todd. Todd was incredibly kind, competent, and humble in exactly the way the DKE predicts a true expert will be.
One day, my mother began asking Todd about supplements and describing all the different supplements my father usually takes at home (in short: a lot). When she asked him for advice about what my father should be taking, this highly skilled physician, an infectious disease expert who had been at the helm during his hospital’s COVID response during the pandemic, didn’t scoff or call my mother silly or say that most supplements weren’t proven or FDA regulated. No. He simply said that he got “quickly out of his depth” on the topic of supplements.
The call is coming from inside the house…
The DKE as a cognitive bias can be incredibly hard to overcome, but it is possible to do so. Knowing it exists is the first step towards identifying and correcting it. Here are a few strategies you can use with yourself and with others:
- Adopt a growth mindset: Complacency is a sign of the sophomore. If you have gotten to a place with a skill where you think, “I’ve got this. I’ve done this a million times. There’s no room for improvement,” that should be a big red flag that you may be experiencing the DKE. There is no such thing as perfection. True experts never stop honing their craft because their expertise allows them to identify all the places where they can improve. A growth mindset means being open to the possibility of improvement.
- Be Todd: Being willing to admit the limits of your expertise. If you can’t see your limitations or think they don’t exist, that’s another big DKE red flag. As you increase in skill, the limits of your abilities will come into focus.
- Seek feedback: Getting feedback from outside parties who have expertise in the arena in which you want to improve can be a hard reality check, but it will help you see your performance more clearly. If you care strongly about improving, expert feedback is invaluable.
- Predict your performance: If the skill allows (such as a test or game in which scoring is involved), make a prediction on how well you expect to perform. If your results vary significantly from your prediction, consider the possibility that the DKE could be involved. It can be tempting to blame the weather, or the equipment, or that you didn’t get a good night’s sleep last night, and those might all be factors, but so too can the DKE.
- Be curious, not confrontational: When you encounter someone who is deep in the throes of DKE, don’t confront them directly. Who likes being called out for being ignorant? Instead ask questions, such as “What makes you think that?” or “How would you handle situation X?” Being Todd in this moment and demonstrating intellectual humility can create a safe space for the other person to step back and reconsider.
Accurate self-assessment is an invaluable but difficult skill to master. Overcoming our meta-ignorance requires a willingness to find the edge of our own expertise, accept feedback, accept our limitations, and keep pushing the boundaries of our abilities.

PS: Tying into one of my favorite time management books, Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman, we cannot become experts in everything we do. It’s literally impossible, and we don’t need to. I think there is something very humbling and therapeutic about having a hobby or activity that you know you aren’t very good at, but you do it anyway for the sheer joy of doing it.
